      Job Description

  • This position's responsibilities are to assist in coordinating the transportation maintenance program for the district, including implementing maintenance schedules, purchasing parts, and ensuring the safe operating conditions of school buses and district vehicles. Service district motor vehicles by changing oil, greasing/lubricating, and filling fuel tanks.
  • Assist in assigning work assistant mechanics and mechanic staff.
  • Assure mechanics are provided vehicle parts in a timely manner keeping “down time” to a minimum.
  • Establish maintenance and parts control database; order, receive and maintain inventory of all parts.
  • Promote and maintain high standard of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work connected areas.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and computer program codes as needed.
  • Process recalls and warranty work.
  • Assist in establishing an effective and efficient system of routine maintenance and preventative maintenance.
  • Assure that hazardous materials are dealt with properly in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and engine defects in buses and other automotive equipment.
  • Repair and rebuild all electrical components utilizing testing devices and machine equipment as required.
  • Make minor roadside repairs as required.
  • Repair and replace seats, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components and assemblies.
  • Perform required preventive maintenance and regular bus safety inspections.
  • Fill in as a substitute bus driver on trips and routes when assigned.
  • Assist in cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room, and other maintenance facilities.
  • Complete vehicle maintenance forms and records on computer.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Transportation.

 

 

  • Dispose of environmentally hazardous materials as needed.
  • Model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of this position.
  • Reports to the Assistant Director of Transportation.
  • Required to adapt to shifting priorities and to frequently re-channel work effort and experiences frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to deal with distraught or difficult individuals.
  • Have sufficient physical dexterity and flexibility to work in confined spaces and sufficient manual dexterity to work with small parts and components in the assembly and disassembly of equipment.

     

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a heavy duty mechanic or full journeyman status as a heavy duty mechanic or a minimum of three (3) years applicable work experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • School bus ASE certification preferred.
  • Experience in electronic diagnostic trouble shooting, preferably with software trouble shooting programs, multiplex wiring systems, and experience with electrical components.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership capacity; excellent management, organization and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to overhaul and rebuild engines, transmissions, differentials, and other major components by repair or replacement of parts; operate tools, equipment, and machines required for performing repair and maintenance of school buses and other motor vehicles; weld (wire feed & gas) and perform minor body work.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication; effective customer service skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and complete tasks; exceptional organizational skills.
  • Confidence with meeting the public, flexibility to handle numerous interruptions, and strong telephone skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of others.
  • Required to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with computer programs and creating spreadsheets (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Required to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to perform tasks requiring moderate to heavy physical exertion.
  • Have sufficient physical dexterity and flexibility to work in confined spaces and sufficient manual dexterity to work with small parts and components in the assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license with CDL Class B endorsement with air restriction removed, passenger endorsement, S endorsement, and Washington State authorization for transporting students or ability to obtain required endorsements, and transport students when required.

      Contracted Days: 248 work days & 12 holidays (260 total contracted days)
